Justice Secretary Leila de Lima and Acting Chief Justice Antonio Carpio were reported to seek the chief justice seat after they inhibit themselves from the JBC meeting.

The two had attended the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) meeting this morning, June 4, 2012, but left when the topic of the next chief justice is about to talk on.

Carpio had his plan to inhibit from the "next chief justice" topic early on after reportedly told his colleagues to put it last on the agenda so he can participate on other matters.

Note that it was Carpio who called the meeting. He then gave the reigns to Leila de Lima.

However, when Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero and Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas Jr. told that it would not be bode well for the JBC if an aspirant to the seat will participate in the meeting.

With this, de Lima excused herself too.

On the meeting, JBC was reported to require the next chief justice to sign a waiver that would allow authorties to open his or her bank accounts.

On the side note, Senator Miriam Santiago said that de Lima had morally disqualified herself to the post after testifying against the ousted chief justice. She however admitted that she is technically qualified for the post as she is a member of the JBC.
