It can be recalled that Mayweather told the media that he wants to fight the Filipino boxer on May 2 of this year. The bold statement was given by the undefeated boxer during the Showtime interview on December 12 of last year.
"We are ready. Let's make it happen. May 2. Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao. Let's do it," Mayweather said in the interview in San Antonio, where his promotional company was putting on a boxing card.
Mayweather was so definite that he even gave date for the fight, this is right after Pacquiao gave Chris Algeiri his first loss. Mayweather, just like Algeiri will also face the Filipino boxer undefeated.
This would mean that the Filipino pacman will put his title belt on the line while Mayweather will gamble his title belt and his hard earned undefeated title.
Pacman said that he will face the American boxer anytime he wants.
"Siyempre kung gusto ni... gusto niya May 2," Pacquiao said on an interview.
"Walang problema, importante lang, kailangan muna matuloy" - the Filipino boxing superstar stressed during the same interview.
Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach, also expressed his eagerness to have the fight.
"I am. It needs to happen for both guys. I think we waited long enough," - the trainer said on a separate interview.
Bob Arum, Pacquiao's promoter however continues to object on Mayweather's selected date, insisting that it was "disrespectful" for Mexican and Mexican-Americans as it was the weekend of Cinco de Mayo.
Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican's celebration of the Mexican army's victory during the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. During the battle, the Mexican defeated the much equipped French forces, giving a significant morale boost to the Mexican army. The Mexican however was defeated on the succeeding attacks.
"To poach that date... shows a terrible disrespect for the Mexican people, both those living in Mexico and those living in the United States," the Top Rank boss said.
With this, Mayweather used it as an opportunity to mock Arum by saying that this is another lousy excused from the Filipino camp.
"I don't know, Bob Arum is trying to throw another excuse out there, talking about how they don't want to fight on May 2nd," Mayweather said during the World Boxing Convention in Las Vegas.
"Why not? Let's make the fight happen." - the American professional boxer added.
Both fighters had their preliminary bout on the social media after both boxer posted provokeable tweets to each other.
Pacquiao told the media that he is optimistic for the fight because the other camp seems willing to sit down and make the negotiation.
"Maganda ngayon kasi nakikipag-usap," he said. "Dati wala eh."
Updates to the fight was said that both camps are still huggling for the price cut.
