Chief Justice Candidates Interviewed


After the seat of Chief Justice of the Philippines had vacanted after the impeachment of Renato Corona, The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) interviewed the 20 candidates for Chief Justice position.

Below is the list of the nominees for the position.

Andres D. Bautista
*48 years old
*Chairman of the Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG)

Soledad M. Cagampang-De Castro
*67 years old
*Became executive director and undersecretary of the Minerals Development Council in 2006.
*Took Law at UP, where she graduated cum laude and class valedictorian, passed the Bar in 1969 with a grade of 85.52%.

Leila M. de Lima
*52 years old
*Current secretary of the Department of Justice.
*Graduated from San Beda College of Law in 1985 and was the class salutatorian.
*Placed 8th in the 1985 Bar exams.

Jose Manuel Icasiano Diokno
51 years old
*Dean of the De La Salle College of Law
*One of the country’s prominent human rights lawyer.
*Son of former Senator Jose Diokno
*First chair of the Commission on Human Rights during the Cory Aquino government.
*Private prosecutors in the impeachment trial of then-President Joseph Estrada in late 2000-January 2001.
*Counsel for Rodolfo “Jun” Lozada, a star witness in the National Broadband Network-ZTE corruption scandal.


Francis Huising Jardeleza
*Served for a long time as counsel of food and beverage giant San Miguel Corp. (SMC).
*Served as senior vice president of SMC.
*Became deputy Ombudsman for Luzon.
*He passed the Philippine Bar in 1975, placing third with a grade of 88.35%.

Maria Carolina 'Katrina' Trinidad Legarda
*57 years old
*Reproductive health and divorce bills.
*Founding chair of the Child Justice League.

Roberto Abad
*68 years old
*Current Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice Roberto A. Abad
*Finished his law degree at the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) in 1968 where he was a Dean's lister

Rafael Morales
*61 years old
*Included in Asian Legal Business’ List of 100 pre-eminent Asia-Pacific lawyers.
*President of the Inter-Pacific Bar Association.
*Finished Political Science at UP in 1970, where he graduated cum laude
*Holds a Master of Laws from the University of Michigan.
*Finished 4th in the Bar in 1975 with a grade of 87.79%.

Raul Cano Pangalangan
*53 years old
*Fifth time that he will be scrutinized by the Judicial and Bar Council for a position in the Supreme Court.
*Columnist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer.
*Became the dean of the UP College of Law for two terms, from 1999 to 2005.
*Took his master’s and doctorate at the Harvard University, where he became a visiting professor in 1998 and 2007.


Arturo Dizon Brion
*65 years old
*Current Supreme Court (SC) Associate Justice.
*Took up Law at the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) and finished cum laude and Class Valedictorian in 1974.
*Bar topnotcher in 1975 with a grade of 91.65%.
*Appointed to the Supreme Court by former Pres. Gloria Arroyo on Mar. 18, 2008.
*Became Deputy Minister of Labor for Legal and Legislative Affairs from 1985-86.
*Undersecretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) in 2001
*Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs for Special Projects of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) from 2002-03.


Rene Vergara Sarmiento
*58 years old
*Became Comelec commissioner in 2006.
*Earned his AB Political Science at the San Beda College, where he graduated magna cum laude.


Manuel Siayngco Jr.
*62 years old
*Retired Regional Trial Court (RTC) judge of Malolos, Bulacan.


Amado Valdez

*Dean of the University of the East (UE) College of Law.
*Government Corporate Counsel and MWSS board of trustees from 2001 to 2002
*Executive director of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) Commission in 2003
*OIC of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Overseas Filipino Affairs in 2004.
*Has a Saturday radio program on dzMM.


Antonio Tirol Carpio
*62 years old
*Current most senior sitting magistrate of the Supreme Court (SC).
*Obtained his law degree at the University of the Philippines (UP) where he graduated Valedictorian and cum laude in 1975


Teresita J. Leonardo-De Castro
*63 years old
*3rd most senior justice of the high tribunal and the only female magistrate automatically nominated for the post of Chief Justice.
*Finished her law degree at the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1972; she was among the top 4 in her class.
*Graduated Bachelor of Arts cum laude, also from UP, in 1968.
*Completed her elementary education in St. Paul
*Appointed to the Supreme Court by Pres. Gloria Arroyo on Dec. 1, 2007


Cesar Lapuz Villanueva
*56 years old
*Former dean of the Ateneo de Manila Law School
*Graduated valedictorian and cum laude from Ateneo Law school
*Placed second in the 1982 Bar, with a grade of 90.15%.
*Took the CPA Board Exam that same year and placed 6th.
*Obtained a Master of Laws from Harvard Law School in 1989.
*Currently the Chairman of the Commercial Law Department


Teresita J. Herbosa
*61 years old
*Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in May 2011
*Has a Master of Comparative Law from the University of Michigan
*Been a professional lecturer at the UP Law, where she graduated cum laude in 1977.


Ronaldo B. Zamora
*67 years old
*Executive Secretary from 1998 to January 2001 of former President Estrada.
*Earned his AB Political Science from UP, graduating magna cum laude in 1965.
*Magna cum laude and valedictorian of the UP Law in 1969.
*Bar topnotcher in 1970, with a grade of 87.3%.


Maria Lourdes Aranal Sereno
*52 years old
*First appointee to the Supreme Court (SC) by Pres. Noynoy Aquino
*Completed her law degree at the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1984 as Class Valedictorian and cum laude.
*Took up AB Economics at the Ateneo De Manila University (ADMU) where she graduated in 1980


Presbitero Velasco, Jr.
*63 years old
*Obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from UP finishing the course in only three years.
*Placed sixth in the Bar exams that same year with a grade of 89.85%.
