Schools Are Suspended Due To The Feast Black Nazarene, January 2012


The feast of the Black Nazarene will be celebreted on Janaury 9, 2012.

In view with this, the Department of Education (DepEd) had announced the suspension of classes in schools that will be affected by the Black Nazarene procession (Prosisyon ng Itim na Nazareno) which was expected to be joined by eight million devotees according to organizers.

According to local authorities, specifically Mayor Alfredo S. Lim, classes on eight schools in Manila area has been suspended due to an anticipated heavy traffic.

Schools that are affected on the Feast of the Black Nazarene celebration on Monday are:

1.) City College of Manila
2.) Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila
3.) Manila Science High School
4.) Araullo High School
5.) Apolinario Mabini Elementary School
5.) Ramon AvanceƱa High School
7.) Geronimo Santiago High School
8.) Manila High School

Manila Mayor Alfredo S. Lim said that the private schools that will also affected by the procession have all the discretion if they want to suspend their classes. Lim also added that even schools that are not located on the actual procession route should also consider the suspension as students and school faculties may find themselves stranded on road.

Considering the huge numbers of expected devotees that will cram along EDSA bare footed, the Catholic bishops has called on the police and military personnel to intensify the security during the actual procession of the Black Nazarene.

According to officials, starting at 5 a.m. on Jan. 9, access to areas will be closed to all types of vehicles.
