PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS HISTORY
Penn State’s football team, the Penn State Nittany Lions, play in the Big Ten Conference as part of the NCAA’s Football Bowl Division I Subdivision. Penn State began playing college football in 1887. Their all-time record is 819-356-43 for a .690 winning percentage. The Nittany Lions got their 800th win in 2008 to become the sixth Football Bowl Subdivision team in NCAA history to win 800 games.
Penn State has won two national titles (1982 and 1986), 3 Big 10 Conference titles (1994, 2005 and 2008) and had 7 undefeated seasons. The Nittany Lions all-time bowl record is 27-13-2. Penn State has produced 39 consensus All-Americans and 1 Heisman Trophy winner (running back John Cappelletti in 1973).
The current head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions is Joe Paterno. The legendary coach has coached the Nittany Lions for an incredible 45 years. Paterno’s all-time record is 401-134-3 for a .748 winning percentage. During the 2010 season, Paterno became the first coach in Football Bowl Subdivision history to win 400 games. Paterno has also compiled the most bowl appearances (36) and wins (24) for a coach in the history of college football and is the only coach who has won all of the five major bowls (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Cotton and Fiesta) in his coaching career. Paterno is also known for challenging his players to excel academically as well as on the football team. In 2010 Penn State’s football team had a graduate rate of 89%, the highest for any Top 25 team.
The Nittany Lions home games are played in University Park, Pennsylvania at Beaver Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 107,282.
