Marikina River Updates

Latest report said that there were about 50,000 confirmed people that has been evacuated from their homes on Marikina City after the Marikina river reached the critical level. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Council's latest Situation Report issued today, June 25, 2011, Marikina River's current level as of 12 midnight is 18.11 meters, where spilling level is only 15 meters.

Ronald Mejia, officer-in-charge of Rescue Unit 161, told GMA News Online that the Marikina authorities have declared Alert Level 3 — the highest alert level — as the Marikina river's water overlapped to 17.1 meters as of 5:40 p.m. yesterday, Friday, Rescue 161 is a unit under the Marikina City Mayor's Office.

Eastern Police District director Chief Supirentendent Francisco Manalo said evacuees are from barangays Tumana, Nangka and Malanday which were taken to the elementary schools.

On the same situation, at around 1:30 p.m. Friday, the 700-hectare reservoir, the La Mesa Dam in Quezon City that supplies much of Metro Manila’s water had started overflowing due to huge volume of rains. Teddy Angeles, La Mesa dam manager said the water level was five centimeters over La Mesa’s 80.15-meter maximum capacity.

Going back to Marikina River, thousands of commuters in Metro Manila were stranded as expected late Thursday due to heavy rains and flooding of the Marikina city's streets that resulted in massive traffic jams. With this, Rubber boats and trucks were deployed to load stranded commuters as well as to rescue residents near swollen rivers, canals and low lying areas.

As of today, no lives were claimed by Marikina river yet. Benito Ramos, executive director of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said that the smooth evacuation of residents in Manila as the waters rose overnight prevented any deaths.

The residents on the affected areas were voluntarily evacuated their homes as they have learned from the previous bagyong Ondoy whcih flooded the entire areas.

"It is a good thing we pre-positioned rubber boats. Thankfully, people reacted well. When we told them to evacuate, they evacuated," Benito Ramos said on an interview.

The overflowing of Marikina rivers is due to bagyong Falcon's heavy rain drops to the majority of Luzon areas.
