Gloria Arroyo To Leave Abroad For Medical Treatment

Former Philippine president and now Pampanga second district's representative, Congresswoman Gloria Arroyo has been waiting for the decision of the Department of Justice (DOJ) on her application for Allow Departure Order (ADO) that would permit her to leave the country to seek medical treatment abroad.

Gloria Arroyo's camp with deputy minority leader, Quezon Representative Danilo Suarez said that Arroyo needs a bone biopsy to find the cause and solution to her rare bone disorder, a procedure that is not available in the country, her close ally said.

“The conclusion is that she needs a bone biopsy, and the procedure is not available here,” Suarez said on a phone interview. “The medical report of the hospital clearly suggested to her she needs a bone biopsy,” Suarez further added.

Saint Luke Medical Center's vice president for corporate affairs, Marilen Lagniton, said that the bone biopsy was recommended by her doctors following her thre surgery on the spines, and said that the procedure can only be done abroad.

The decision however is expected to be released anytime this week or early next week.

On the other hand, Gloria Arroyo's spokesperson, Elena Bautista-Horn, said earlier today (11/03/2011) that the ex-president need not to beg to the Aquino administration to grant her request for a bone biopsy abroad.

De Lima further noted Health Secretary Enrique Ona and said that all indications and report from DOH secretary indicates that the former president is recuperating very well as of press time, and that her condition is improving. The DOH report suggests to the DOJ that no immediate necessity, at this point in time, for the DOJ to grant the request from Arroyo's camp.

Gloria Arroyo is reported to have been recuperating very well at the Linden Suites Hotel in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

The DOJ secretary however said that Mrs. Arroyo was not yet completely banned to travel abroad and his final decision will be issued next week on her return from Cambodia.

“I want to be very sure. In other words, I need a few more days to further reflect on the issue at hand. I’d rather be criticized for some delay in my action than be criticized because I made the wrong decision.” De Lima said on the media interview.

It can be recalled that the former president can not travel abroad because of the two watch orders (WLOs) that has been issued by the Department of Justice (DoJ) against Gloria Arroyo amidst multiple criminal cases filed at the Office of the Ombudsman and the pending preliminary investigation at the DoJ.

As expected, the Arroyo's camp had accused the Aquino administration of having prejudged the cases against her and to her denied application.

Mrs. Arroyo's spokesman, Raul Lambino, said that Mrs. Arroyo's camp would resort for legal remedies on the soonest time.

“We don't expect any more relief from her (De Lima) or President Aquino. They have prejudged Mrs. Arroyo's case. We may resort to court and other legal remedies soonest,” Lambino said on an interview.

On the other note, TV Patrol on their text poll earlier this night asked the public on Will they allow Gloria Arroyo to leave the country or not?
About 17% of the votes agreed that Mrs. Arroyo should travel abroad while the remaining 83% percent do not want Mrs. Arroyo to leave the country.

UPDATE
Health Secretary Enrique Ona said earlier today that the bone biopsy that was recommended by Mrs. Arroyo's doctors, which her allies said that it is only available abroad appears to be available inside the country.

The health secretary's assessment is contrary to what Marilen Lagniton, St. Luke's Medical Center vice president for corporate affairs, said on Wednesday: that the bone biopsy recommended by Arroyo’s doctors following her spine surgeries can only be done abroad.

“We don’t have expertise and it’s not available in the Philippines,” Lagniton had said in a text message.

Furthermore, the DoJ seeks for an itinerary list from the former president before a decision on her request for treatment abroad can be made.
