Despite lack of funding, the "Dragon Warriors" made it to the competition to defend their title on men's 200-meters event. They however, became the champion on the 1000-meters event, lambasting powerhouse teams of Hungary, Australia, ITaly and Trinidad and Tobago. They finished the course with four minutes and fifty nine seconds, 4:59, creating a new world record for the said event.
“Pinaghirapan naming mabuti para lalong lumayo ang lamang namin sa kanila,” Ramie Llando, a Filipino paddler said on an interview.
The Filipino dragon boat team made it to the tournament with the help of two good sponsors - Asia Brewery Inc.’s Cobra Energy Drink and Philippine Airlines (PAL), which shouldered their ticket fares to Florida. However, the Philippine dragon boat team had cut their team members in half, having exported five pairs from the original ten.
This 2011 dragon boat competition was joined by 2,000 athletes from all over the world. The Philippine team made it to the finals and ended up snatching the gold at the 1000-meters event.
The team said that the support of the Philippine community on Florida greatly contributed on their success.
