Tornado or Buhawi Hits Negros Occidental
A strong tornado (whirlwind) or buhawi hit Pontevedra, Negros Occidental yesterday, October 26, 2011. About 130 residential houses was destroyed by the buwahi that cross the town about 3:30 in the afternoon yesterday.
According to Maria Regina Ortega, a representative from Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office of Pontevedra, 24 houses was totally wiped out while the other 106 were partially damaged.
According to the report from the Provincial Disaster Management Program (PDMP), there were six barangays that where affected by the tornado which includes San Isidro, Buenavista-hibong, MH del Pilar, Miranda, Canroma and Bangkal Don Salvador Benedicto.
As expected there was a wide power interruptions to the areas where the buhawi occured and to the nearby areas.
The affected families were nursed on the evacuation centers and was given food assistance by the local government.
There was no reported death due to the whirlwind, however, one child was reported to have received minor injuries after the incident.
The buhawi was reported to have lambasted the town of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental along with heavy rains.
The incident reach Philippine televeision and was featured on tv patrol earlier.
