Bad English Skills Blamed Low Passers Rate At 2010 Bar Exams

Manila, Philippines - Only 982 passed the Bar Examination for the September 2010 exam, that figure was taken from 4,847 who took the test.

Yes, it's too low.

Examinees and their families are surely disaapointed, but as they said: "Business as usual", unsuccessful examinees will just get over with this lesson and live back the hope they first got.

But speaking of "Adding insult to injury" - bar examiner Atty. Rodrigo Lope S. Quimbo offered this advice to those who are planning to take the exam again: "Brush Your English!"

Here's an extract from services.inquirer.net, from Quimbo.

"When I read some of the answers, I was like ‘What did he say?’ Many of those who got a grade of below 50 did not know how to write and speak in English,” said Quimbo.

Under the rules, an examinee who gets a grade below 50 in any one subject is automatically disqualified even if his average is 75 percent or better. And Quimbo said it was not just a matter of grammatically incorrect essays.

"If it were just some grammatical mistakes, I would have let it pass. No one’s perfect. But the problem was that some of the words they used were really wrong. They had no sense. They did not make any sense," Quimbo said.

"The reasons why a high number of examinees are disqualified vary. The most common, I think, would be the inability of the examinee to express himself in English. Because the law is written in English and because advocacy needs to be in the English language, the examinees must be able to answer questions in English,"Quimbo added.

Now that is rubbing salt to a fresh wound.
Nothing can be worst than that I guess.

Was Atty. Quimbo just boldly concern, that he just brave to say it for the benefit of the examinees or was this something too harsh that it appears to be an insult to the face of the failed examinees and their families?

What do you think ?

Note: If you found anything grammar mistakes on this article, please be reminded that I'm an engineer and I have no plan of taking the bar.
